Tears of Joy: How to Fix Your Makeup After `I Do`

Bride Rylie Wistuba. Photo by Every Little Wonder. Makeup by Dani Lynn Artistry. Once you've perfected your bridal makeup, you don't want your happy tears to wash it all away. During "I do," it's difficult not to get a little misty eyed. Plus, when friends and family are all in one place, you never know when a wave of joy will bring about another round of joyful tears. Instead of trying to avoid the inevitable, prep your look to withstand some light waterworks and have the tools on hand to repair tear streaks and blotchy cheeks. For a flawless look from start to finish, follow these tips to fix your mineral makeup after crying.

Water resistant formulas are your friend!

Lauren Conrad has taught us all to use a water resistant mascara to avoid black or brown tear streaks on the face. It’s a simple lesson… don’t forget it.

Stop your tears at the source.

When the waterworks start, it is tempting to rub and wipe the lower lashline, but you're probably only going to make things worse. Always blot tears with a tissue from the inner corner of the eyes before they run. If there are tears along the lashline, let them dry on their own if possible. Rubbing will create dark under eyes as well as a blotchy appearance to the skin. Be gentle! If your wedding dress has pockets, stuff them with tissues. If not, ask your maid of honor to come prepared.

Give your skin a cool down.

Your skin can become red and puffy when you cry unless you've perfected the pretty cry. Cool and calm the skin with a hydrating facial mist. Let the mist dry before applying additional makeup.

Pat powder onto the skin with a sponge.

Keep pressed powder foundation, blush and a dense makeup sponge in a clutch nearby. Gently press the powder on blotchy or streaky areas using the sponge to smooth out coverage. Once skin appears even, use the clean side of the sponge to pat and blend blush onto areas that need a bit more color. Don't apply too much product. Redness and blotchiness will subside naturally after a while, and you don't want that caked on makeup look. If the powder creates a texture on the skin, you can also finish your application with a hydrating mist.

Cancel out redness.

After tears, eyes can look a little red. Try an eyeliner in a nude or peach shade on the waterline to instantly cancel out redness and brighten the eye area. If you have just a few minutes to fix up your tears, this is one step that makes a big impact with minimal effort.

Have the right tools.

It always helps to keep an emergency kit on standby for all of your bridal beauty needs. It's better to be over prepared than under-prepared, so don’t skimp on the supplies! Here are a few items we recommend:

  • Cotton swabs
  • Water resistant mascara
  • Lipstick
  • Blush
  • Pressed powder
  • Makeup sponge
  • Blending brush
  • Eyeliner
  • Tissues
  • Eye drops
  • Advil

A bride should be ready to handle anything and everything that comes her way. Having a touch-up kit will give you a little peace of mind during your busy day.
