Bridal Beauty Diary: Engagement Photo Tutorial

Last week we talked about how to find the best makeup artist for your big day. Now let’s chat about engagement photos! Ryan and I chose to do our engagement photos outside around the beautiful city of Denver. Not only was it a great way for us to get some practice in front of the camera before the big day, it was also a great test run for makeup. I really wanted my makeup for the photos to be timeless and natural. Because I was changing into three outfits, it was also important that my makeup lasted all day and worked with each outfit. We decided to keep the look very classic and only switch up the lip color with each look. Janeena, glo’s National Makeup Artist, did a great job playing up my favorite features and we decided to document the engagement photo trial to give everyone an inside look at what she did the day of the photoshoot.

Foundation

When it comes to foundation, I definitely gravitate towards a “barely-there” look for everyday but I knew I would need a little something extra for the photos. Janeena focused on keeping my skin looking dewy, fresh and natural.

Step 1: Janeena applied Balancing Moisture Remedy to give my skin a much needed boost of hydration. I love Balancing Moisture Remedy because it’s great for sensitive skin and is light enough to wear under makeup without balling up.
Step 2: Using the Flat-top Kabuki Brush, Janeena applied an even layer of Luminous Liquid Foundation SPF 18 in naturelle. My skin is on the dryer side, so this was a great choice because it helps my skin look dewy and adds a healthy glow. That being said, it might not be the best photo foundation for brides with oily skin.
Step 3: To cover up blemishes and lighten my under eye circles, Janeena used Liquid Bright Concealer in brighten. She also applied it on my brow bone for a lifting effect.

Eyes

For both engagement photos and wedding photos, Janeena recommends a neutral, timeless look that focuses on bringing out the color of the bride’s eyes.  A bright-eyed and classically feminine look flatters everyone!

Step 1: Applying Shadow Primer to entire lid is crucial for creating looks that last all day!
Step 2: Janeena applied Eye Shadow in seashell as a base and then followed up with haze and twig in the crease.
Step 3: Eye Shadow in harvest is one of my favorite shades so I was so glad Janeena used it on the entire lid. It’s a great shade for helping blue eyes pop!
Step 4: To finish the look, Janeena applied diamond in the inner corner of my eye and smudged a little bit of mink on my lower lashline.
Step 5: This was my favorite part of the look  - a little kitten wing! She used Liquid Ink to create a small wing to really open up my eyes.
Step 6: For brightness, Janeena lined my waterline with Precision Eye Pencil in peach.
Step 7: To finish up the eyes, Janeena filled in my brows with a little bit of Eye Shadow in twig.

Contour and Color

Janeena is a contour and highlighting master! I love how she’s able to add depth and dimension while still keeping the look natural!

Step 1: Janeena contoured my cheekbones, nose, forehead and chin using Bronze in sunkiss. Step 2: Using one of my favorite products, Shimmer Brick in luster, Janeena highlighted all of the right places.
Step 3: I am a huge Cream Blush fan because it brightens up my complexion with a slight dewy finish. Janeena used guava on the apples of my cheeks for a natural pop of color.

Lips

This is where I wanted to have a little fun to accentuate my different outfits. The primary look we were shooting was a very casual outfit so I wanted my lip color to be something similar to what I would wear everyday. Janeena picked the Royal Lip Crayon in imperial pink which has a soft pink tone - perfect for my casual look. For the next two looks we pulled out two of my favorite Suede Matte Crayons: sorbet and crush! We picked crush to go with my black cocktail dress ensemble because it added a fun, flirty pop of red. Sorbet was the color we picked for my final outfit, a colorful and flirty shift dress. It was so much fun adding these pops of color to my looks, and by keeping the rest of my makeup natural and classic I still felt like me! Engagement pictures are so much fun because you get to spend time with your sweetie and capture great moments without all of the stress that comes on the actual wedding day.
