5 Ways To Update Your Beauty Routine

New year, new beauty routine! While spring is a few months away, the arrival of a new year calls for a little spring cleaning. Refresh your regimen and revive your skin to renew your love for your daily beauty routine.

1. Try a facial oil

Incorporate a facial oil into your evening skincare routine a few nights a week. Oil can be used in place of your usual night cream, or you can add a few drops into your moisturizer. glo Senior Makeup Artist Janeena Billera likes to mix oil into foundation, depending on the skin type she’s working on, to add a natural, dewy glow.

Dry skin that’s lacking oil can benefit from oil-rich products, however oils can be beneficial for both dry and oily skin. Argan Oil has a high fatty acid content, so it is easily absorbed and leaves no oily residue behind. In addition, Argan Oil helps soften and freshen the skin while helping regulate sebum production.

2. Put your best brow forward

Brows have the ability to make a big impact. They add structure to your face shape and frame the eyes. It’s one of those steps in your beauty routine that will have people asking, “Is there something different about you?”

You can sculpt and shape for bold brows or go for a more natural routine. One of our favorite tools is Precise Micro Browliner, a fine tip brow pencil that allows you to create short, hair-like strokes.

3. Mix up your eyeliner

It’s easy to get stuck in a set beauty routine every day. With eyeliner you have a lot of options to work with–liquid, pencil, powder, cream–and they all achieve different looks. Liquid and cream are ideal for clean, crisp lines and creating flawless winged liner. Pencil and powder are great for soft definition.

You can even layer your liner! After applying liquid or cream, use the Smudge Brush to add a touch of matte black shadow for a smoky look.

Switching up your eyeliner will create a subtle change in your look. If mixing up your format isn’t on the agenda, try an alternate shade instead. Black is a staple, but brown, charcoal and olive are stunning as well.

4. Protect your skin

Whether sunscreen is already a core part of your daily regimen or not (hint: it should be!), there are a variety of ways to incorporate SPF into your daily life. Instead of a traditional sunscreen, try a tinted face primer with SPF or a tinted moisturizer with SPF.

Multitaskers can save valuable time in your morning routine. Mixing foundation with sunscreen, a popular DIY method, actually dilutes the effectiveness of your sunscreen. It’s important to use moisturizers and primers specifically blended with SPF to make sure you’re receiving the full benefit.

Mineral makeup, used alongside your daily SPF, can help protect the skin. Physical sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which are often found in mineral makeup, deflecting UVA and UVB rays. It’s a beautiful thing when your makeup and skincare work together.

5. Use products in unexpected ways

Sometimes mixing up your makeup routine is as simple as working with what you already have. There are a lot of tools in your collection that can be used in more ways that one.

  • Lightly pat lipstick onto the apples of your cheeks and blend out with your fingers.
  • Line your upper lashline with eyeshadow using a damp brush.
  • Dab cream blush on your lips for sheer color.
  • Use blush and bronzer as eye shadow.
  • Add a sheer, shimmery shadow to the center of your bottom lip for a full pout.
  • Fill in your brows with a matte eye shadow.
  • Use a luminescent shadow as a cheek highlight.
